The cancellation of the Winter Deaflympicsby USA Deaflympics Media Team on February 11, 2011 11 February 2011 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- USA Deaf Sports Federation received word earlier today from the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) that the 17th Winter Deaflympics were cancelled. William Bowman, the vice president for international affairs has this to say: "This unexpected turn of events left us in a situation that we had never experienced before. The Winter Deaflympics have been held every four years since 1949 and for something like this to happen is unparalleled." "Joining me, the USADSF Board regrets this unexpected turn of events and all of the time and energy invested by our Deaflympians in preparing for Slovakia. Our athletes were committed to preparing and fundraising for their trip, only to find out days before they were to depart that this international sporting event was cancelled." The USADSF Board and the U.S. Winter Deaflympics committee will be meeting to discuss the next steps. We have been in close contact with our athletes and coaches throughout this difficult time. The USA Deaflympics website (www.usadeaflympics.org) will continue to be updated and we will also send out information via Facebook and Twitter (@usdeaflympics). |
